Team Unwhelm

Katie Christianson

Owner, and Head Bitch in Charge at Unwhelm Coaching

I’m not sure what else you need to know about me because this site is one giant not-so-humblebrag, but here goes: I’m a Libra and an Enneagram Type 2, Myers-Briggs ENTJ, Commander personality. If any of that means something to you, you can assume you mostly already know me. I am ridiculously passionate about women helping women. I believe it’s how we heal this fucked-up world.

When my friends have great news, I celebrate, and I cry with them when they grieve. I adore my kids and my pets. The kids are grown up, so my camera roll is full of animals. (BTW, your pet photos are always welcome via text, email, DM, or actual printed photos. Kids, too, but always pets.) My officemates are Peter Brady the dog, Smaul Paul Blart the cat, and Mary the Beta. Yes, that’s Peter, Paul, and Mary; they each have their own Instagram accounts. I met my brilliant novelist husband, Joe Cooke, when we were performing in a community musical theater production, and he’s been my favorite guitarist ever since. We live at 7200 feet in the Santa Fe desert, and we love it.

Land acknowledgment

Unwhelm Coaching is headquartered in what is now known as Santa Fe, New Mexico. New Mexico today is home to 23 Tribes, Nations, and Pueblos, including 19 Pueblos, the Jicarilla Apache Nation, the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, and the Navajo Nation.

We recognize that we are now occupying stolen land.

The name of this land in the Tewa language is Oghá P'o'oge (white shell water place). In Northern Tiwa, it is known as Hulp'ó'ona, and in Navajo, Yootó (bead + water place). This area was originally cared for and governed by the Jicarilla Apache and Pueblos people. We recognize the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico: Acoma, Cochiti, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambé, Ohkay Owingeh, Picuris, Pojoaque, Sandia, San Felipe, San Ildefonso, Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Zia, and Zuni. We acknowledge and honor the ancestors, elders, and people of these nations and Pueblos

We also recognize that a statement is not reparation or reclamation but rather a place to start. To acknowledge our place and reduce the harm we are part of, we make a monthly donation to the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women to support their work finding and honoring Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women.

We encourage you to research the true “ownership” of the land you occupy and develop an action plan to support reparation. For more information, start with The Native Governance Center’s resource Beyond Land Acknowledgment: A Guide.

A word about DEI:

We believe that a DEI statement should be a living document and should serve only as a representation of the work we do every day. When we know better, we do better and don’t know unless we ask.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work are essential to who I am as a person and what we do at Unwhelm Coaching. My mission is to use my multiple positions of privilege to amplify the voices of those who do not share the same advantages. I am a human who owns a lot of Ws: a white, well-educated, well-connected, wealthy woman. As such, I am afforded access to physical, emotional, financial, and societal space that many of my sisters are not. As we say here at Unwhelm Coaching: it’s not my fault, but now I get to fix it.

So what does that mean in practical terms? First, beyond the boilerplate language of inclusion and who we do not discriminate against, we take practical steps to fix it.

We use the word “woman” on this site and in my business to mean any human who identifies as female, non-binary, or gender- fluid. We give preference to women in selecting the humans we work with when we seek and provide products and services. I am the proud mother of beautiful LGBTQIA+ humans, and I support them without reservation or hesitation, which includes giving preference to members of that community.

When we are shaping our offerings, we do so to make them accessible to humans who have been pushed to the margins of society: women, women of color, women with disabilities, neurodivergent women, women who lack wealth and education, women who do not have secure housing. We believe that when we offer women resources, training, and support, all humans benefit. That means we ask: who can afford to pay us, and how do we pay for those who cannot? Of course, not everything we do will be available free of charge, but as we are able, we will continue to expand those offerings.

As we grow, we commit to continuing the work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and strive to remain humble and teachable.
